Making E-Commerce Secure Against Fraud (handout)
Speaker: Mannix Pabalan, General Manager, AyosDito.ph

The intricacies of E-commerce have provided merchants with a host of interesting challenges. Perhaps the biggest challenge is establishing and maintaining trust. Spam, fraud, identity theft and fly-by-night e-retailers threaten consumers' fragile trust in online marketplaces, particularly those in which they are asked to provide credit card information.

Building Online Trust (handout)
Speaker: Jovel Cipriano, CEO, PinoyDelikasi

Trust becomes a key issue in the buying process. Winning the customers' trust and increasing their confidence is essential for E-commerce success.

(Note: During this event, in the Q&A portion, Jovel talked about Sure Pass meant for start-up entrepreneurs and individuals. More than 2 months later, Qartas formally launched Sure Pass within the Sulit.com.ph community.)

The above topics were presented by Jovel Cipriano and Mannix Pabalan during the DigitalFilipino E-Commerce Summit last November 13, 2009 at Hotel Intercontinental, Makati City.

Jovel Cipriano

Jovel Cipriano embodies the qualities of a modern Filipino entrepreneur—innovative and bold in facing new challenges—qualities that drove him to become a pioneer in Philippine e-commerce.

A graduate of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, holding degrees in Computer Science and Tourism. As a seasoned Technopreneur, he has worked for multi-national companies like American Express and IBM. He worked for IBM Philippines for 5 yrs as a Territory Manager based in Cebu, handling it's Visayas and Mindanao operations. With his frequent trips to Manila and back  ---as is customary for many traveling Filipinos to bring pasalubongs to people back home-- he would have people requesting him to buy for them danggit, pusit, dried mangoes, otap among others, he started earning a few thousand pesos on the side for every trip back. Realizing this as an oppurtunity, he decided to put up a website offering a hassle free option to the Filipino pasalubong tradition. On January 2000, with only P10K capitalization, he put up Pinoydelikasi.com with the help of high school friends and family, while he was still with the Big Blue (IBM).

PinoyDelikasi.com” (instead of Pinoydelicacy.com), was coined from its unique selling slogan “Lutong Pinoy, Delicious Kasi”. It’s the 1st of its kind online Filipino delicacy store. It gives a hassle-free “pasalubong” shopping to its customers worldwide. Its products are not hi-tech or scientific breakthroughs, but things closer to our hearts and palates—Filipino delicacies such as  piaya, chichacorn, pastillas, broas, otap, ensaymada, and dried mangoes. Pinoydelikasi.com being the first and perhaps the only Filipino-born "pure" internet firm that sells Philippine Delicacies. He is now distributing Filipino goods to at least 12 major distributors worldwide.

Together with promoting Filipino culture, values, and tradition, Jovel, whose first formula revolved around the premise of passion and hard work, now utilizes a more sophisticated business model which has won international acclaim – The Agora Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Export Marketing in 2008, Best Practices in E-Commerce for Small and Medium Enterprises at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Digital Opportunity Center Awards, The World Summit Award’s “Best in E-business Category” organized by the United Nations’ World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), a global contest to select and promote the world’s best e-Content, held in Dubai, UAE.  Furthermore, Pinoydelikasi was one of the 6 winners  for the “Best Practices Competition” and “Best in e-Distribution category” given by the World Trade Organization(WTO) during the World Summit held in Geneva, Switzerland.
